Ontario introduces new enable the extension of some pandemic emergency orders over the next year

Ontario has introduced new legislation to enable the extension of some pandemic emergency orders over the next year. Doug Ford says the legislation would allow the government to extend or amend some emergency orders a month at a time, with the law expiring a year after it’s passed. Here is the  full statement from the premier:

The goal would be to bridge the gap between the strict lockdown and public health measures required to initially flatten the virus curve, and the less stringent conditions needed as COVID-19 case numbers improve. The hope is to lift the state of emergency by July 24th, but there are no guarantees.
 

GOVA Transit riders must now wear masks

If you’re getting on Sudbury transit this morning, you’ll need a mask. In accordance with instructions by Public Health Sudbury & Districts, residents will be required to wear a face-covering or non-medical mask when visiting any indoor City facility or when using GOVA Transit.
 

NOSM creates two slots for Armed Forces

The Northern Ontario’s School of Medicine has announced two slots specifically earmarked for the Canadian Armed Forces. The school is partnering with the Department of National Defense we will prepare Canadian military physicians to treat underserviced and remote communities across Canada and around the world.
 

North Bay city council seeking cooling centres

North Bay city council is actively looking for a cooling centre to get residents through the heatwave. The issue rests in the need for social distancing and additional cleaning measures needed due to the pandemic.
 

Three new fires in the North East

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says three new forest fires are in the Northeast Region today. One of these fires, Cochrane 4, is listed as not under control at 40 hectares in size. According to the Ministry fire map, the fire hazard for the North East goes from Moderate to Extreme.

The forest fire that started Sunday north of Kamiskotia Lake is now being held. Known as “Timmins 6” the MNRF says thanks to ground personnel, it has not grown beyond seven hectares.
 

Storm hits Greater Sudbury, flooding in Caperol

That storm that struck parts of Greater Sudbury left a mess in Capreol. In a release, the City of Greater Sudbury says some intersections are reopening after flooding from the storm. Capreol residents, and particularly those living in the Lakeshore Street area, may have experienced water or sewer backups in their basements. Roads crews are on-site to attempt to mitigate the effects of the flooding.

Sault Ste. Marie Police responded to reports of an explosive device

Sault Ste. Marie Police Service responded to Peoples Road yesterday after a possible explosive device was said to be in the area. The 1000 block of Peoples Road was closed for a short time in order to facilitate the investigation. Police say there is no threat to the public and the device in question is currently in police possession for examination.
 

OPP  –   please put on  your  PFD

And with summer here, the OPP are reminding boaters to put on their PFD’s. In more than 80% of boating mishaps, those on the water aren’t wearing PFD’s and it only takes a moment to put it on.
