LU Pool remains closed into early September, despite requests it reopens
Some swim groups in Sudbury are hoping sooner than later they can get back to their sport at Laurentian University. The pool, like many places, has been closed. While there are more than 500 competitive swimmers in the area, as far away as Sault Ste Marie who use the water as it is the only 50-meter Olympic sized pool in North Eastern Ontario, the school says getting students back to class safely is their top priority.
Vehicle fire dealt with quickly in North Bay
Thankfully there were no injuries in a vehicle fire yesterday in North Bay. The Engine compartment of Ford Focus caught fire, completely destroying the front end of a vehicle on Durril Street. A quick response from North Bay Fire prevents further damage to any other vehicle. There is no word as to the cause.
Erratic driver arrested, two arrested to possession
Timmins Police Service has charged a 25-year-old woman after quite the episode over the weekend. Officers responded to numerous reports of an erratic driver in the area of Airport Road. The driver fled on Algonquin Boulevard and in keeping with public safety concerns, the pursuit of the vehicle was discontinued. The subject vehicle and driver were there located at a Willow Street address.

Two from Toronto are face charges after nearly $50,000 in cash was seized from their glove box during a traffic stop. It happened just south of Greater Sudbury on Highway 69. The vehicle stopped for speeding had an odour of cannabis leading to an investigation. The two inside were charged with possession, their vehicle was towed.
Motion to take a second look at the Sudbury Community arena brought forward
A pair of Greater Sudbury councillors are bringing forward a motion requesting that staff take a closer look at the KED, once again. The proposal is based on a vision from a Sudbury-based architecture firm for the refurbishing of the Sudbury Community Arena. It promises to save the city $40 million.
North Bay’s transit fare goes digital
North Bay’s transit’s fare collection is going digital. Yesterday the council approved a contract worth nearly $593,000 to introduce an electronic fare collection system to buses. The new system will provide riders with a reloadable card that will be able to be tapped at an automated fare counter. Cash fares will still be accepted.
Explosions heard in Timmins attributed to “blasting caps”
Some explosions could be heard this week in Timmins. Police say, however, not to worry… the noise was caused by blasting caps. Someone brought what Timmins Police call “a cache of dated blasting caps”. An OPP explosive disposal unit brought the caps to the city snow dump and detonated them.
Timmins and area Elementary school students head back next week
District School Board Ontario North East says high-support students will still return this Thursday and Friday. It’s all tied to a delay in getting enough PPE. Elementary students are slated to go back in a staggered fashion between next Tuesday, September 8th and September 10th.
