5-people-displaced following apartment fire

Five people have been displaced from their homes after a fire in Greater Sudbury. It happened at an apartment building on Cote Avenue in Chelmsford yesterday afternoon. There is significant smoke and fire damage to at least two of the units. There were no injuries, but the estimated damage costs are between $50,000 and $100,000.
 

Two new cases of COVID-19 reported yesterday

Public Health Sudbury & Districts is reporting two more cases of COVID-19. One of the cases has been linked to close contact with a confirmed case and the second is still pending information at this time.
 

New parking eyed for Sudbury’s downtown core

Downtown Sudbury could be getting some new parking. At next week’s meeting of the operations committee, councilors will look at the creation of new spaces for vehicles and bicycles, as well as a bus loading zone. The goal is to ease the parking burden of spots lost to Place des Arts, the Elgin Greenway and the Junction East projects.
 

Sault Ste Marie RIDE campaign in full swing

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service have officially launched its annual Festive RIDE Campaign. The goal is to encourage motorists to celebrate the holiday season responsibly. Cruisers will be out with lights flashing. Last year they stopped just over 1,700 vehicles.
 

New Plasma Centre opening in Greater Sudbury

The new Sudbury plasma donor center is open for the first time at its new location. 900 Lasalle boulevard. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the opening of Canadian Blood Services’ dedicated plasma donor centre in Sudbury was delayed. Two new more state-of-the-art centres will soon follow—one in Lethbridge, Alberta., and the other in Kelowna, B.C.
 

North Bay city council looking to hire a property standards officer

North Bay city council has given the city preliminary approval to hire a property standards officer. Good for a two-year contract, the goal is to help deal with vacant and derelict buildings in North Bay. he proposed operating budget will it heads to council for final approval at a future date.

Traffic lights on Bay Street in the Soo, now active

Traffic lights along Bay Street in Sault Ste Marie are now active. This is following major construction along the corridor. The traffic signal at the intersection of Spring and Bay Streets has been replaced with a stop sign on Spring Street, and there are also two new pedestrian crossovers located at Bay Street at Spring Street, and Bay Street at Pim Street.
