Possible new variant of COVID-19 detected in Greater Sudbury

Public Health Sudbury & Districts the much-anticipated vaccination for residents of long-term care and high-risk retirement homes will begin this week. Shipments of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine is expected over the next two weeks in quantities sufficient to immunize all residents of these facilities in its service area by Feb. 5.
 

Fire personnel respond to early morning fire

Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services responded to a report of a house fire in the 200 block of Albert Street West shortly after 4 a.m. today. The street was closed to traffic as firefighters were seen battling a fire in the upper level of the residence. There is no word as to the cause nor the total damage done.
 

Four-youth facing possible COVID-19 charges

Four youth, be tween the ages of 18-19 are facing COVID-19 fines. This is after Temiskaming OPP received numerous calls for mischiefs in Cobalt and in the City of Temiskaming Shores of the four allegedly throwing eggs at individuals, vehicles and buildings.

1-new death due to COVID-19 announced in Algoma

Algoma Public Health is reporting the region’s second COVID-19 death. The notice was given out yesterday. The first death related to COVID-19 was reported by APH on Jan. 18. There are currently 12 active cases in Algoma, including one hospitalization.
 

Out break declared at Marymount Academy

Meanwhile, Public Health Sudbury and Districts has declared a COVID-19 outbreak in Marymount Academy. This is after one more individual tested positive for the virus, bringing the total to two cases associated with the school. Marymount and Pius XII Catholic Elementary School remain closed.
 

COVID-19 vaccine arrives in North Bay and Timiskaming area

The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit and Timiskaming Health Unit has received the first shipment of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. The Health Unit says in a release, the shipment is small and is allotted to residents of long-term care. The Health Unit has been in contact with long-term care homes to start the immunization process.

St. Vincent Place in Sault Ste Marie now under the CMHA

And St. Vincent Place in Sault Ste Marie is turn shelter operations over to the Canadian Mental Health Association. Sault Ste. Marie’s shelter for homeless men is moving from its current location into the former Sacred Heart School building on Wellington St. E.
