Fire sends one-two to hospital in North Bay, one in critical condition
One person is in hospital following a fire at the North Bay Golden Age Club senior’s facility. It happened early this morning, just before two. Firefighters identified where the fire was located and rescued the tenant and the tenant’s dog. The fire was contained in a single apartment. Paramedics have treated and transported two residents to the hospital and assessed several other residents at the scene.
Drive Through-Vaccine Clinic coming Monday
Sudbury residents looking to get their COVID-19 vaccine will soon have access to a drive-through vaccine clinic. Being set up at the Real Canadian Superstore on Lasalle Boulevard for Monday, the walk-in clinic at that location is setting up the special, one-day clinic. The event takes place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
14-new cases of COVID-19 added by the PHU
Fourteen new COVID-19 cases and five recoveries were reported yesterday by the Porcupine Health Unit. Thirteen cases are in Timmins and one person is in the Kapuskasing area. Nine people said to be close contacts of a known case and the exposure of five cases is under investigation.

One more Algoma District resident has tested positive for COVID-19. The individual is from the Sault Ste. Marie area and is believed to have caught the virus from close contact. The person is self-isolating.
Sudbury council to look at moderating fireworks
Sundridge council is now looking at governing how fireworks are used in the municipality. This along with other things, the bylaw involving fireworks covers their sale, storage and transportation, but not how they are used. Staff will research how other communities regulate their use of fireworks. The goal is to provide the council with options to discuss at its May 12 meeting.
LU maintaining spring enrollment
Laurentian University is maintaining spring enrolment on par with that of 2020. This is all as the school enters its second phase of restructuring. In a news release, the school indicates that amounts to 4,300 graduate and undergraduate students are enrolled in the spring semester, similar to last year’s numbers.
Paramedics soon to be treating palliative patients in their homes
A pilot program will soon be underway, making it possible for eligible palliative care patients in northeast Ontario to have treatment at home. It will be carried out by Paramedics previously hired to take patients to the hospital. The hope is that it will allow those in need to stay at home while clearing needed beds in the ER.
