40 new cases of COVID-19 added by the PHU
The Porcupine Health Unit added 40 new COVID-19 cases in the region yesterday. Of the case count 18 cases in Timmins, 14 people are in the James Bay region, seven in the area of Cochrane, Matheson, Iroquois Falls and Smooth Rock Falls, and one in the Kapuskasing area.

The Porcupine Health Unit is advising of a potential COVID-19 exposure due to travel. It was on the May 17th flight from Toronto to Timmins. Passengers aboard Air Canada flight AC8287 with scheduled departure at 7:35 p.m. are being asked to self-monitor for symptoms. Those in rows 16 to 20 are considered high risk and are asked to self-isolate.
Gateway house will open this summer in North Bay
Gateway House, in North Bay, will officially open its doors on July 15. It will move out of the low-barrier shelter on Chippewa Street West and into Gateway House, the former Ontario Provincial Police building, located on the same site as the shelter. Gateway House, a 36-bed facility for those waiting to get into affordable housing, includes 16 units, with support available to help residents learn to live independently.
Two taken to HSN following a vehicle rollover
Two people were taken to HSN Saturday, following a vehicle rollover. The crash happened on Big Nickel Mine Road between Lorne Street and Elm Street. Both individuals are in stable condition, however, the driver is believed to have serious injuries.
Sault City Council to vote on twin pad arena
Sault Ste Marie City council will decide on the move forward with the twin pad arena facility. In January, the council approved funding for the arena project at $28,800,000 through long-term debt financing. One tender price of $27.9 million meets specifications to replace the crumbling McMeeken Centre, but council will discuss options at tonight’s meeting.
Four new fires in the North East this weekend
Four new wildland fires have been confirmed in the Northeast region. Sudbury 16 is being held at 1.2 hectares 3 kilometres southwest of Ashagami Lake. Sudbury 17 is under control at 0.1 of a hectare, northeastern of Bird Lake, east of Killarney Provincial Park, and Sault 4 is located south of Jarvis Lake, approximately 20 kilometres northeast of Sault Ste Marie. It is not yet under control at 0.1 of a hectare. The other fire is in the Bancroft area.
Sault Ste Marie fire using digital technology for training
Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services is using some new technology when it comes to fire extinguishers. Rather than practicing on a real fire, they are using a simulator that mimics a variety of situations where a portable fire extinguisher might be used. It involves pointing the digital extinguisher at the digital fire and put out the flames.
