Heat warnings issued again today for a number of areas

It’s going to be another hot one for some residents in the North East. Greater Sudbury, Elliot Lake and surrounding areas could feel the daytime maximum temperatures near 30 degrees return. Environment Canada says hot and humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality, and to check in with family and friends who are young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and those working outdoors.
 

Power back on following an outage in Coniston

Greater Sudbury Hydro says the power has been restored after an outage in the Coniston area. Thunderstorm-related, it happened when a tree came down on power lines. Roughly 200 customers were affected. Anyone without power this morning should contact GHU.
 

3-ticks found to be positive with the bacterium that can cause Lyme disease in NBPSD

The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit confirms that since April, three black-legged ticks found in the district have tested positive for the bacterium that can cause Lyme disease. Two of the ticks that tested positive were from the North Bay area, and one was from the Parry Sound area. Ticks are not common in the area, but they can hitch a ride on birds and deer.
 

Male charged for theft of a vehicle in Timmins

And a Timmins man is charged after the Timmins Police Service for theft. This is after received a report of a pickup truck stolen Monday from a Highway 101 residence in the Connaught area. The stolen vehicle and a suspect were subsequently located on Highway 655 OPP who were investigating a separate matter at the time. Following an investigation, a 32 male, of Timmins, has located. He had been charged with theft of over $5,000 and breach of probation.
 

Sudbury Resident celebrates 100-years

Greater Sudbury marked another Centennial birthday yesterday. Lille Neemre was born on June 8, 1921, in Estonia. She came to Canada 67 years ago and has lived at the Birchglen Apartments on Paris Street for the last 16 years. Residents of the building sang Happy Birthday, and property management even supplied ice cream cake.
 

Town of Sundridge council declares seat vacant

Members of Sundridge council have now moving to fill an empty seat. This is to replace former council Coun. Stephen Rawn by declaring his seat vacant. Rawn announced his resignation at the May 12 meeting when he told his colleagues he and his wife had sold the family home and were moving to their cottage in nearby Strong Township.

26 new cases of COVID-19 for the PHU

New COVID-19 numbers in the Porcupine Health Unit area continue to be high, even if outpaced by recoveries. There were 26 new COVID-19 cases and 38 recoveries being reported in the Porcupine Health Unit region yesterday. There are 13 cases in Timmins and 13 in the James Bay area. The exposure of 19 cases is under investigation and seven people are the contacts of a known case.
