Nipissing COVID-19 cases take a jump, fueled by Jail Outbreak

The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit reported 23 new cases of COVID-19 yesterday and five resolved. All 23 cases were in the Nipissing District. The change appears to be largely driven by the ongoing outbreak at the North Bay Jail, which the health unit declared on June 13. There have now been 33 cases recorded in the outbreak, up from 18 Monday. The health unit reported on social media that all 33 cases are active. Of those, one involves a staff member.
 

LU to reopen campus August 16th

Laurentian University has announced a campus reopening for August. Students, staff, faculty and community members will once again have access as of Aug. 16. Food services, Library, Residences, Student Recreation Centre and Ben Avery gymnasium and the IT Service Desk are all on the list. The school says that the safety of all community members will remain the highest priority and they continue to fully comply with guidance from Public Health Sudbury and Districts.
Meanwhile,
Laurentian University’s McEwen School of Architecture is fully accredited. This is after the Canadian Architectural Certification Board granted the professional Master of Architecture Program ‘Initial Accreditation’ for a term commencing July 1. Since it opened in 2013, more than 250 students have completed their undergraduate degree at the School, and 100 students have since graduated from its Master of Architecture program.
 

Timmins Chamber, City Hall hoping for reopening, Friday

Timmins City hall and the Timmins Chamber of Commerce are hopeful of a reopening of sorts come this Friday. Both organizations, said in a joint release this week that is the current hope of the Porcupine Health Unit. Confirmation and details are expected from the health unit in the next couple of days.
 

Sault Police respond to weapons complaint at Albert and Bruce

A busy Sault Ste Marie street in the downtown has reopened. Police could be seen diverting traffic away from a home in the 300 block of Albert Street East at the corner of Albert and Bruce. Members from the bike unit, patrol units and emergency services unit were on scene investigating a potential weapons call. Albert Street re-opened about 4:30 p.m.
 
 

Timmins Police have seen a jump in impaired driving collisions

Timmins Police say over the past six weeks, they’ve seen a concerning jump in impaired driving calls. In all seven charges have been laid. Police say all the incidents in question involve a collision. The most serious was a vehicle hitting a motorcycle, seriously injuring the biker, then fleeing the scene. Police will be out and watching.
 

“Operation Steet Sweep” is coming to Sault Ste Marie

Operation Street Sweep is coming to Sault Ste Marie. Organized by 4th year Algoma University law student, Patricia Maitland, it’s been done in a number of US cities where residents take responsibility for their streets. A youtube video has been published on the event, and for more residents can go to Operation Street Sweep on FB.

South River-Machar Community Centre and Arena getting an upgrade.

The South River-Machar Community Centre and Arena are getting an upgrade. Backup generators and an updated kitchen. The work is due to grants from the provincial and federal governments totalling $200,000. In addition to letting patrons continue using the arena during a power outage, the backup generators also allow the site to be used as an emergency shelter should the need arise.
