5-year-agreement at VALE ratified with an 85% approval

Vale is announcing a new five-year collective bargaining agreement with United Steelworkers (USW) Local 6500. Wage increases of six percent over five years and maintaining post-retirement benefits for new hires are among the highlights. It was ratified in voting Tuesday evening with 85% approval. The new agreement takes effect immediately.
 

Road closure continues is Elliot Lake

Elliot Lake Drivers are being reminded of a road closure this morning. The Esten Drive South culvert work began yesterday and continues with road closures. The work will be located at the intersection at Highway 108 require the closure of Esten Drive South between Highway 108 and Colwill Drive during construction. The public is thanked for their patience.
 

Hansson steps down at Hospital President and CEO

Sault Area Hospital President and Chief Executive Officer Wendy Hansson has stepped. The hospital has declined to comment on Hansson’s departure. An e-mail sent to hospital staff yesterday indicates that the Vice President of Operational Sustainment and Chief Financial Officer will assume the role for the next two weeks (Aug. 3-16).
 

Basement fire in North Bay blamed on cooking

A basement apartment in North Bay, on Clarence Street, suffered extensive smoke damage following a fire yesterday. North Bay Fire and Emergency Services responded to a call for smoke and flames at approximately 5:15 p.m. Careless cooking has been blamed, and the fire damage was minimal. Firefighters worked to clear out the smoke so the tenants could go back inside the building.
 

37-year-old charged with a break and enter theft

The Timmins Police Service has charged a 37-year-old with break and enter. It’s related to an incident that occurred during the early morning hours of Monday, at a Balsam Street South residence. The suspect fled on foot but was identified, located, and arrested by the Timmins Police Service. They were found to be in possession of stolen property.
 

7 new correctional workers coming to North Bay, Sudbury

North Bay’s and Greater Sudbury’s correctional facilities are getting a fresh infuse of staff. Ontario’s 99 recent correctional officer graduates, including the seven new correctional officers who have now completed their training that will join the frontline at the North Bay Jail and Sudbury jail. Ontario announced the addition of new correctional officers late last week.

New funding coming for Timmins Native Friendship Centre

The Timmins Native Friendship Centre is receiving upgrade funding. The joint provincial and federal funding is through the COVID-19 Resilience Stream (CVRIS) of the Investing in Canada program. Five projects in the region are receiving cash.
The Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres and the Timmins Native Friendship Centre are receiving $318,187 for a Timmins Alternative Secondary School Program project. It includes $254,550 from the federal government and $63,637 from the province. It will allow for upgrades to the Timmins Native Friendship Centre, which is the alternate secondary school program delivery site in Timmins.
It will see six new energy-efficient boilers installed, as well as a new dishwasher, kitchen sink, and eye washing stations.
Meanwhile, the Town of Iroquois Falls is receiving $100,000 — $80,000 from the federal government and $20,000 from the province — to make the town hall building more accessible by installing a ramp and automatic doors.
