Another possible COVID-19 exposure, due to travel

Algoma Public Health has issued a COVID-19 exposure warning. It is for passengers on a recent Air Canada flight from Sault Ste. Marie to Toronto. Anyone who sat in rows two to eight during Flight AC 8320 last Saturday should contact the health unit.
 

Driver sought-following MVC with motorcycle

A Sudbury man is recovering after being struck by a motor vehicle. A motorcyclist was hit from behind, on Highway 69 Sunday just after 2 pm. It’s believed to have involved an SUV in the French River area. The driver, still wanted by Police was operating an SUV, described as being white or cream in colour.
 

Workers at One Kids place vote in favour of job action

Unionized workers at One Kids Place in North Bay are prepared to take job action. Voting in favour, 97 percent in favour of a strike mandate, their union says some 73 professionals represented by OPSEU delivered the mandate to its bargaining team. Staff at One Kids Place have been without a contract since March 31, the union says.
 

Timmins police have charged an alleged rock thrower

The Timmins Police Service has charged a local man after nearly causing an accident. It occurred in the area of Highway 655 during the early evening hours of Monday. A complaint was received by the Timmins Police where a male pedestrian was observed throwing a rock at a vehicle passing by causing severe damage to the vehicle’s windshield. The driver of the vehicle managed to safely bring the vehicle to a halt on the shoulder of the roadway. The total damage to the vehicle is estimated to be $1000.00. A 46-year-old has been charged.
 

Location proposed for Greater Sudbury Transitional Housing

Greater Sudbury city council has endorsed a location for a proposed transitional housing build. The hope is for 40 units on Lorraine St., near Lasalle Blvd. and Notre Dame Ave., northwest of the city core. The city can now apply to secure its earmarked federal rapid housing funds for the project. This step will allow the city to apply for $7.4 million in funds already set aside for the city through the second phase of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s Rapid Housing Initiative.
 

Focus on your driving – OPP

OPP are reminding drivers to be diligent when on area highways. This is after several major collisions on Trans-Canada Highway 17 between Sault Ste. Marie and Heyden. This highway is the only one to take travellers across Canada and police say it’s busier than it has ever been.
 

Another hot day, plus a heat warning in the Timmins area

Environment Canada says it’s going to be a hot day for a number of places… including Timmins and areas where a heat warning has been issued. Timmins – Cochrane and Iroquois Falls are on the list. A high of 31 is expected with humidex values 35 to 41. They are suggesting residents drink plenty of water even before they feel thirsty and stay in a cool place.
 

Post-secondary schools ask for COVID-19 vaccines

All post-secondary institutions in Greater Sudbury are announcing they will require those accessing their campuses this fall to be vaccinated against COVID-19. The vaccination policies at Laurentian University, Cambrian College and Collège Boréal have been evolving throughout the summer. Those who are not vaccinated will be subject to enhanced screening and COVID testing if they wish to access campus.
 

Bomb threat called off in Sturgeon Falls

The evacuation of a city block in Sturgeon Falls turned out to be a false alarm. This is after reports of a suspicious package was located in a vehicle. Some wondered if it was a car bomb… however the explosives unit of the OPP determined the suspicious package was unfounded and there was no danger to public safety.
 

Algoma U joins a UN network research institution

Algoma University is now a member of a UN network of research institutions. The goal is to address some of what they call, the world’s most complex problems. Algoma U joins 31 other members of the Canadian network of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network, which was set up by the UN in 2012.
