House fire called in in New Sudbury

Greater Sudbury personnel were called to a house fire yesterday in New Sudbury. The call came in at around 1 a.m. from Gemmell Street near Auger Avenue. When crews arrived they could see flames shooting out of the roof. Thankfully everyone was already outside. There were no injuries. The cause of fire and total damage estimates are not yet available.
 

Powassan Seniors Complexe construction continues

Construction continues of a Powassan seniors complex. The 50-unit building remains on schedule and on budget with more than half of the building now complete. The project was announced by the Non-Profit Organization for Almaguin Housing (NOAH) last summer and the Parry Sound District Social Services Administration Board is backing the $11-million loan to build the complex.
 

Timmins Police seeking a missing person near the hospital

The Timmins Police is looking for a missing person. Reported late yesterday, it was reported in the area to the north of the Timmins and District Hospital. OPP’S canine unit was called in to assist with this search. There is no threat to public safety.
 

Suspected wanted for theft

Soo Police are looking to hope to identify a suspect wanted for theft. This is after a male attended Station Tower Optometry located at 428 Bay St. and allegedly selected four frames and two pairs of sunglasses valued at $950 before exiting the store.
 

Single Motor Vehicle Collision turns fatal

The OPP say a single-vehicle collision on Highway 144 Monday morning has proven fatal. It happened south of Cartier, in the District of Sudbury. The highway was in both directions while the investigation was underway.
 

Missing teen found safe

Sault Ste Marie Police say a missing teen has been found. Jevon Rocchetta was reported missing on August 13th. Details aside, Police say he has been located safe.
 

One day initiative goes ahead to support homeless

A one-day initiative is going ahead regarding homelessness in the Timmins and Cochrane District. It’s being done by the Cochrane District Social Services Administration Board. In March, the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing issued a directive for service managers to do a point-in-time count of sheltered and unsheltered homeless people on a single night to capture numbers and basic demographics of the people affected at a single point in time.
 

Remember – be bear wise

Greater Sudbury residents are being reminded to be bear-wise. This is after a bruin was spotted in and around the area of Anderson Farm Museum in Lively. While the bear has since wandered off, residents are being reminded to put out trash the morning of, keep their BBQs clean, and minimize bird feeders.
 

One new fire in the North East

Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services have confirmed one new forest fire in the northeast region. Hearst 8 is 0.4 of a hectare and not under control at this time. The fire is located southeast of Shannon Lake. There are currently eleven active fires in the region. Four fires are being observed, two are under control, one is being held and four are not under control.
 

Brampton man charged with stunt driving

A 48-year-old Brampton man is facing stunt-driving charges. This is after being clocked travelling at 154 kilometres an hour on Highway 69. The driver’s licence has been suspended for seven days and the vehicle impounded for 14 days. The driver was released on Provincial Summons and will appear in court, Jan. 4 in Sudbury.
 

Yes… those were Snowbirds you saw in Sault Ste Marie

For those in Sault Ste. Marie and area… if you think you saw the Snowbirds flying over the region, you would not be wrong. The birds have confirmed they are on a cross-Canada journey. The Snowbirds departed from Moose Jaw, Sask. stopping in Thunder Bay before arriving in the Sault area just before 8 p.m.
