South Porcupine Food Bank sets sights on new location

The South Porcupine Food Bank is hoping to move into its new permanent location later this month. Since the fire in the connecting building in June, the food bank moved out of its previous Main Street location. It has been operating at temporary locations. The food bank’s new permanent location is at 97 Bloor Ave. in South Porcupine.
 

Vehicle Fire in Greater Sudbury on Lorne Street

Sudbury fire personnel were called to the scene of a vehicle fire yesterday in the city. It was on Lorne Street. Witnesses say that the sedan had both smoke and flames coming from the front. The fire was extinguished, the cause is not known.
 

Sault Police, MTO and OPP check vehicle mufflers

Meanwhile Sault Ste. Marie Police Services partnered with the MTO this week and the Ontario Provincial Police in a series of vehicle checks. Its focus? Checking vehicles for modified or removed mufflers that don’t comply with provincial legislation. All up, 652 vehicles were triaged, with nine drivers receiving notifications.
 

Trees Nurseries in North Bay feed three programs

Trees for Nipissing is finding new growth thanks to two new nurseries in North Bay. A volunteer group since 2004, the goal is to have a supply chain of different sizes for different needs. The group says that’s becoming a reality thanks to the two nurseries set up inside the City of North Bay. One on Second Avenue and one on Hammond Street. Three projects will take place this month.
 

Missing woman:  Sudbury resident Athena Contant

Greater Sudbury Police are looking for a missing woman. She has been heard from since Aug 20. Athena Contant is from Sudbury. It’s possible she may have travelled to the Mississauga/Brampton area. Contant is 27, 5-foot-3 and 115 pounds with blue eyes. She is also known to wear what Police call “dramatic” makeup. Anyone who may have had contact with Athena Contant is ask to call Police. She has several tattoos, including “Alone” above the right eye; “LOVE” on the right wrist, a flower inside the right wrist, and a heart on the back of her left hand.
 

Nip U runs bottle drive for Cystic Fibrosis

Nipissing University student union, that normally wash cars to raise money and awareness for Cystic Fibrosis are trying something a little different this year. They’re holding a community bottle drive at their new Student Centre at 221 College Drive. Everyone in the community is invited to drop off their bottles tomorrow, September 4th. Student volunteers will be wearing masks and gloves to unload the bottles in the designated unloading areas. Drivers need to stay in their vehicles.
 

Driver charged after caught speeding

The Timmins Police Service has charged a Moonbeam, Ontario man, after a traffic stop. While on patrol in South Porcupine, an observed a passenger vehicle being driven at a high rate of speed on Harold Avenue. A traffic stop was initiated. The driver was found to be in possession of an illegal substance. Police are reminding drivers of the illegalities and dangers of driving impaired.
 

Two vehicle collision snags traffic in Sault Ste Marie

Drivers in Sault Ste Marie were snagged up following a traffic collision. It happened in the eastbound lanes of Trunk Road. The area was closed from Lake Street to just east of Pino’s due to the two-vehicle crash. Sault Ste. Marie Police Services, Fire and EMS responded to the scene. There is no word as to what led to the accident.
 

Rainbow board announces new student trustee

Rainbow board has welcomed a new student trustee. Michael Yao is a Grade 12 student in the French immersion program at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School. The board says Michael will lead the student senate and serve as student trustee on the Rainbow District School Board for the 2021-22 school year.
