One new COVID-19 related death reported by Sudbury Health Unit

Public Health Sudbury and Districts on Thursday is reporting one new death, due to COVID-19. Due to privacy, no further information has been released.
 

Premier Doug Ford in Greater Sudbury, $4.2 announced from NOHF

Premier Doug Ford was in Greater Sudbury yesterday for a fundraising event. It was closed to the public. It was confirmed yesterday during a news conference to announce $4.2 million dollars from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation to a number of local businesses.
 

Investigation continues following smashed window at Gathering Place

The investigation and repairs continue at the Gathering Place in North Bay. This is after someone allegedly threw a brick at their front window destroying more than $1,000 in food and supplies. Witnesses say the incident occurred around 10:20 yesterday. By 10:30 police had arrived to view the video footage.
 

Christmas Parades a GO in North Bay, Timmins

Downtown Timmins BIA is looking for volunteers ahead of the Christmas Parade. With the recent lifting of restrictions for events like parades, more floats are needed ahead of the Nov. 13th event. Meanwhile, the city of North Bay says their Parade is also a go… slated for November 21st.
 

Sables-Spanish River FD looking for recruits

The Sables-Spanish Rivers Fire Department is looking for recruits. The group’s four fire halls; encompass Massey, Walford, Webbwood and Shakespeare. To date, there are 60 SSRFD members.
 

SSM will soon have 22-new beds for those in need

Sault Ste. Marie will soon get new homeless beds for those in need. Spread between two locations they are going into the former Steelton Centre on Wellington St. West and the new, just-approved shelter at the Verdi Hall, on Queen St. West. Both locations are expected to open over the next few weeks.
 

Greater Sudbury new COVID-19 Hotspot in Ontario

Public Health Sudbury and Districts say their region has once again become a COVID-19 hotspot in Ontario. This is according to the region’s medical officer of health, Dr Penny Sutcliffe, who has issued a class order. Anyone with a confirmed case of COVID-19, who is awaiting COVID-19 test results, or has been a close contact to someone who has tested positive for the virus, must self-isolate for 10 days, or until they receive a negative test result.
 

Ontario Government to support Wage enhancement until March 2022

The Ontario Government will invest $373 million to extend the temporary wage enhancement for support workers. Both Support and Direct support workers will see a wage increase of between $2-$3 more an hour until March 31, of next year. Full details are below:
• $3 per hour for approximately 38,000 eligible workers in-home and community care;
• $3 per hour for approximately 50,000 eligible workers in long-term care;
• $2 per hour for approximately 10,000 eligible workers in public hospitals; and
• $3 per hour for approximately 60,000 eligible workers in children, community and social services providing personal direct support services to those who need assistance with the activities of daily living.
 

North Bay Police asking for help in a break and enter

North Bay is asking the public for assistance following a break and enter. It pertains to the entrance of a storage trailer in the 200 block of Oak Street West. It happened sometime between 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday of last week and 7:00 a.m. yesterday. Multiple construction tools were allegedly taken. The suspects left on foot, heading west towards Lake Nipissing.
 

Non-profit in Greater Sudbury to help residents in need

A new non-profit organization will attempt to aid Greater Sudbury vulnerable citizens ahead of colder weather. The Sudbury Centre for Transitional Care has around 40 volunteers who provide outreach and help people experiencing homelessness find shelter. That said, the organization does not yet have a physical centre for transitional housing.
 

DSSAB moving on 10-year Homeless Action Plan

Meanwhile, DNSSAB has approved the “Homelessness Action Plan in the Nipissing District”, to provide a framework of action that addresses homelessness. It will take place over the next 12 months. The framework draws from the Board’s 10-Year Housing and Homelessness Plan.
 

SSM Police take four into custody following $30k drug bust

Sault Ste Marie Police have 4 in custody after nearly $30,000 worth of narcotics were found during a traffic stop. This was after a pickup truck reported stolen was spotted in the area of Cathcart and Beverly streets early yesterday. What’s more… is that the driver allegedly hit a parked vehicle on Gloucester Street and two police vehicles in an effort to evade police.
 

North Bay Library will ask for a vaccine passport, come Monday

The city of North Bay says, as of Monday, November 1st, all visitors to the North Bay Public Library will be required to show proof of full vaccination to enter the library. Proof may be either a printed copy of an official vaccination document, printed QR codes or smartphone QR codes. Masks are still required, and curbside service will be offered.
