Algoma Public Health Announces possible COVID-19 exposure
Algoma Public Health is advising the public of a potential exposure to COVID-19. It’s for anyone who travelled on Air Canada flight AC 8201, November 4th. Passengers who sat in rows 8-18 and flight crew who served these rows should contact their local public health unit for further information.
Staff Shortage leads to longer lineups at Sudbury Landfill Site
A staff shortage is leading to longer lineups than usual at the Sudbury Landfill Site. It’s on The Kingsway. The delays are expected for the next two weeks. To help reduce wait times, the city will be closing the site’s reuse store on both Nov. 6 and Nov. 13. Residents are also encouraged to check a Livestream of the Sudbury Landfill Site available on the city’s website before loading up.
Outbreak at St. Charles remains ongoing
An outbreak remains ongoing at St. Charles College in Greater Sudbury. As of news time, there are two active cases of COVID-19 associated with the school. The school remains open. This time, the outbreak is associated with the school’s elementary wing. There are currently two current school outbreaks, at St. Charles College and École Ste-Marie.
Kapuskasing Mayor Alan Spacek named ONTC chair
Former Kapuskasing mayor Alan Spacek has been named chair of the Ontario Northland Transportation Commission. Alan served as mayor of Kapuskasing from 2006 to 2018 and is a former president of the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities.
Section of Connecting Link complete in Timmins
The drive to work should be a smooth one for many. Algonquin Blvd. between Thériault Blvd. and the Mattagami bridge is reopened. The City of Timmins public works department says all that’s left to do is restoration on several side streets. That will happen this week.
Remembrance Day going ahead in North Bay
For the second consecutive year, residents in North Bay will pay tribute in person at this year’s Remembrance Day service. Hosted by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 23 it will be conducted at the cenotaph on First Avenue West. The pre-laying of wreaths will happen before the service.
East Algoma OPP looking for a missing man: 48-year-old Richard Martel
East Algoma OPP is seeking the public’s assistance in locating a missing person. 48-year-old Richard Martel, was last seen in Ottawa with ties to Sault Ste. Marie, Blind River and Timmins. Richard is described as:
• 5’6” tall
• Medium build
• Brown hair
• Brown eyes
• multiple tattoos on both arms
Anyone with information is asked to call the OPP.
Sault Area Hospital COVID-19 policy goes into effect today
Sault Area Hospital COVID-19 Health Care Worker Management Policy goes into effect today. The policy extends mandatory vaccination to all workers and staff. A narrow window of exemptions will be given.
“Change your clocks, change your batteries”
The clocks fell back yesterday morning, right on time… and now fire departments are encouraging residents to change their batteries. The “Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery” campaign urges all homeowners, landlords, and tenants to adopt the lifesaving habit of changing smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detector batteries. They add, if that alarm chirps, warning the battery is low, it should be replaced… regardless.
Lansdown early learning centre relocating
The Lansdowne Early Learning Child Care Centre is relocating, starting November 15th. The chief concern at the Durham Street daycare has been the increased discovery of sharps. While there have been no injures, winter is coming, and they may be hard to detect in the snow.
NOSM seeking input in North Bay
The Northern Ontario School of Medicine is looking for input from area residents. Their hope to be coming Canada’s first stand-alone medical university. A town hall session is being held tonight in North Bay with schools Dean, President and CEO. Tonight’s evening’s consultation session is taking place from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm at the Grande Event Centre on Main Street East.
LU announces new communications officer
Laurentian University is introducing a new communications officer. Sarah de Blois has been with the university since 2013 and has been in Greater Sudbury since 2007. She has a BA from Laurentian in Communication, and a masters from Ottawa in the same. She is now a PhD candidate at LU in the Human Studies and Interdisciplinarity program.
City of Timmins selected as Northern Terminal location
The city of Timmins has been selected as the northern terminus of passenger rail service. The option of rail, with tracks to and through Timmins were removed in the 1980s. The station will be built in Porcupine. Passenger rail service to the Northeast was discontinued in 2012 and is expected to be back in 2025.
